Most tiling problems aren't really tiling problems. They're substrate problems. Tiles that lift, grout that cracks, lines that drift — these rarely happen because someone bought the wrong tiles. They happen because the surface underneath wasn't properly prepared, or because the setting out wasn't done right before the first tile went down. Getting this stage right takes time and experience. Rush it and the finished job will tell on itself for years.

Tiling is a service Bertie has carried out across hundreds of London properties — bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, wet rooms, and open-plan living spaces with large-format porcelain running wall to wall. The preparation process — checking for level, applying the right primer or adhesive board, setting out the layout so cuts fall symmetrically — takes longer than most clients expect. That's intentional. The time spent before the first tile goes down is the difference between a job that looks right and one that almost looks right.

If Bertie is tiling as part of a wider renovation — a bathroom refit, for instance, where he's also handling the plumbing, plastering, and painting — there's a clear advantage. The walls are handed over in the correct condition. There's no question of whether a surface is ready, no miscommunication between trades, and no remedial work before tiling can begin. One contractor managing the sequence means the tiling starts from a solid, properly prepared base every time.

Why Bertie for Tiling & Flooring?

Bertie has tiled across London for over 20 years — from standard bathroom refits to full wet rooms and large-format stone floors that require a different level of care in handling, cutting, and laying. His approach to setting out is methodical: before any adhesive goes on, the layout is planned so that the finished job looks intentional, not improvised. Cuts are accurate, grout lines are consistent, and silicone is applied cleanly. There are no shortcuts in the prep. The result is a finish that holds its quality for the long term, not just for the first few weeks after the grout dries.

How It Works

1

Assess and Set Out

Bertie visits the property, checks the substrate for level and condition, and plans the tile layout before anything else — including where cuts will fall and how grout lines will run.

2

Prepare the Surface

Any necessary boarding, priming, or levelling compound is applied and given time to cure properly — this stage isn't rushed, because the tile finish depends on it.

3

Tile, Grout, and Finish

Tiles are laid to the agreed layout, grouted to the correct specification, and finished with clean silicone where wall meets floor or fitting — leaving a result that's ready for the room to be used.

Tiling & Flooring FAQs

That's exactly what I check on the site visit. Substrates need to be solid, level, and free of movement — plasterboard, existing tiles, concrete, and timber all behave differently and need different preparation. I'll tell you honestly what needs doing before I can start, and I'll handle any prep work required. There are no surprises once we begin.

Sometimes, yes — but only if the existing tiles are fully bonded, the surface is sound, and the added depth won't cause problems with door frames, skirting, or fittings. I'll assess it properly. If the existing tiles are lifting, hollow in places, or poorly fixed, they need to come off first. Tiling over a bad base just delays the problem.

A typical bathroom — walls and floor — takes two to four days, depending on the size of the room, the tile format, and what prep work is needed. Large-format tiles or complex patterns take longer because the setting out and cutting demands more care. I'll give you a realistic timeframe when I quote the job, not an optimistic one.
