There is one thing that separates a plasterer who's good at their job from one who is genuinely excellent: the finish. Not just on the day. Not just before the paint goes on. The finish that's still flat, crack-free, and true twelve months later, when the light catches the wall at an angle and you can see every imperfection — or you can't. Bertie James is in the second category. Plastering is his standout trade, and across more than 20 years of work on London properties — from Victorian terraces in Hackney to period flats in Elephant and Castle — he has built a reputation for walls that decorators and clients notice.
Most homeowners calling about plastering have the same situation: building work has just finished, or the walls are tired and cracked, or there has been a damp patch that has been treated and now needs replastering properly. The concern is always the same too — whether the job will be done right, or whether they will end up with a skim that looks fine until the first coat of emulsion goes on and every ridge, hollow, and toolmark shows through. Bertie's approach starts with proper preparation: the right suction control, the right bonding agent, the right materials for the substrate. The skim coat comes last, not first. That is why the finish stays flat.
Because Bertie works across multiple trades, there is a practical advantage that solo plasterers cannot offer. If you have just had building work done — a stud wall, a new doorway, a ceiling repaired after a leak — Bertie can assess what the other work has left behind and plaster to the standard it actually needs, rather than working around someone else's decisions. If your renovation involves painting afterwards, Bertie hands walls over in the condition a decorator needs: dry, flat, primed where required, and ready to work with. If painting is part of the job, Bertie handles that too. For larger renovation projects where plastering is one part of a wider job, see Full Property Renovation. That is not something you get when you are co-ordinating three different tradespeople who have never met.

Why Bertie for Plastering?
Plastering is the trade Bertie is known for. In over two decades on London sites — covering everything from council maintenance contracts to high-end private renovations — it is the skill that clients and other tradespeople consistently mention. He is precise about preparation, rigorous about suction and bonding, and does not rush a skim. On period properties, where cornicing and ceiling roses need restoring rather than ripping out, that level of care matters even more. When Bertie plasters your walls, your decorator does not have to fill, re-sand, and complain — they can get straight to work.
How It Works
Assessment & Prep
Bertie visits, checks the substrate — plasterboard, brick, old lime, whatever you have got — and works out exactly what preparation the surface needs before any plaster goes on.
Boarding, Bonding & Skimming
The base work is done properly first: bonding agents, scrim tape on joints, correct suction. The skim coat is applied and ruled off to a flat, true finish — no rushing, no shortcuts.
Drying & Handover
Once the plaster has dried to the right colour and hardness, Bertie checks the walls in raking light, addresses anything that needs it, and hands the room over ready to decorate.
Plastering FAQs
It depends on the size and condition of the room, but a standard bedroom or living room typically takes one to two days — one day for prep and boarding if needed, one day for the skim. The plaster then needs at least a week to dry fully before you decorate. I will give you a realistic timeline when I quote the job.
If the plaster is generally sound and you just have a few cracks or a damaged area, a patch repair is usually the right call. If the walls are hollow-sounding when you tap them, the surface is crumbling, or you have had a damp problem that has been treated, a full replaster is normally the better investment. I will tell you honestly which one you need when I visit — I am not in the business of recommending more work than is necessary.
It means the existing surface is not in good enough condition to hold paint properly — it might be too rough, too porous, or patched in a way that will show through the paint finish. A fresh skim coat gives your decorator a smooth, consistent surface to work with, and the end result looks dramatically better. In most cases it is the right call, especially in older London properties where walls have had years of patching and repainting.
