Most decorating problems aren't paint problems. They're preparation problems. The paint goes on fine — it's what happens in the weeks and months afterwards that tells the story. Hairline cracks reappear. Paint flakes at the edges. Roller marks catch the light. That's not the paint's fault. That's what happens when the filling, sanding, priming, and masking haven't been done properly before the first coat goes anywhere near a wall.
Decorating is where Bertie is NVQ-qualified, and it shows in the approach. Every surface gets assessed before work starts — what needs filling, what needs sanding back, what needs a coat of primer before it'll hold colour properly. Bare plaster gets sealed. Hairline cracks get opened up and filled rather than painted over. Woodwork gets sanded between coats. It takes longer than just getting stuck in with a roller, but the finish lasts — and it looks right from the first day.
There's a particular advantage when Bertie is also the plasterer on a job. The walls aren't handed over to a decorator in an unknown condition — Bertie knows exactly what state they're in because he finished them himself. There's no guesswork about whether the plaster is dry, no arguments about who's responsible for a surface defect that appeared after the plastering work started. It all stays under one roof, with one person accountable for the result. That matters more than most people realise, especially on a full renovation where the decorating is always the last thing in and the first thing visitors notice.

Why Bertie for Decorating?
Bertie holds an NVQ in Painting & Decorating — which means the qualification is there, but so is two decades of practical experience applying it on real London properties, from Victorian terraces with imperfect walls to modern flats where the finish needs to be sharp enough to photograph. The preparation process is taken seriously every time, not just on the jobs that look straightforward. And because Bertie often works on a property across multiple trades — plastering first, decorating to follow — the handover between stages is seamless. There's no finger-pointing between a plasterer who's left the site and a decorator who's arrived to find surfaces that aren't ready. It's the same pair of hands, the same standard, from start to finish.
How It Works
Surface Assessment
Before a drop sheet goes down, Bertie walks the rooms and assesses every surface — identifying what needs filling, what needs sanding, and what needs treatment before paint will sit properly on it.
Preparation
All filling, sanding, priming, and masking is completed before a brush or roller touches a finished wall — this is the stage that determines how the job looks in two years, not just two days.
Application & Finishing
Paint is applied in the right number of coats for the surface and the colour, with woodwork sanded between coats and all edges cut in cleanly — no rushing the last coat to get off site.
Painting & Decorating FAQs
It depends on the condition of the surfaces and what's involved. A straightforward bedroom in reasonable condition — walls, ceiling, and woodwork — might take two days. A hallway with ornate coving, multiple doorways, and walls that need more prep work could take three or four. I'll give you a realistic timeframe when I see the rooms, not a number I've guessed over the phone.
Either works. If you already know what you want, I'm happy to work with paint you've sourced. If you'd rather I take care of it, I can advise on products and finishes for different surfaces — there's a difference between what looks good on a paint card and what performs well on a high-traffic wall or a bathroom ceiling. I'll point you in the right direction.
I do both, which makes the process a lot simpler. When I've done the plastering, I know the walls are ready — the right drying time, the right condition to take a primer. You don't need to manage the gap between trades or worry about someone else arriving to find the plaster isn't ready. It's one job, one standard, one person responsible for the result.
