There is a lot of carpentry work out there that looks fine at first glance. Then you notice the skirting that doesn't quite meet the wall, the door that catches in summer, or the shelving that shifts under any real weight. Carpentry is one of those trades where the difference between a good job and an average one is obvious — just not always immediately. It shows up months later, when the problems are already bedded in.

Bertie holds NVQ qualifications in Carpentry & Joinery and has been working in the trade for over 20 years. The range is what sets him apart. He works from the structural stage right through to the finest finishing detail — stud walls, joist repairs, and subfloor work at the build-out end; skirting, architrave, and door hanging at the other. That breadth means Bertie understands how decisions made early in the build affect the finished result. A door frame fitted correctly at first fix makes the second fix straightforward. A subfloor done properly makes the flooring above it last.

For period properties, this matters even more. London has a huge stock of Victorian and Edwardian houses where the original joinery — sash windows, panelled doors, staircase balustrades — is still intact and worth preserving. Bertie takes that work seriously. Repairing a sash window properly is far more involved than fitting a modern replacement, and the result is almost always better. Where Bertie is also carrying out other renovation trades on your property, that continuity of contact makes a genuine difference. One person who understands the full scope of the job is always going to deliver a more consistent result than a sequence of separate tradespeople who've never met. Why Bertie for Carpentry & Joinery?

Bertie holds NVQ qualifications in Carpentry & Joinery and has been carrying out carpentry work across London for over 20 years — across everything from council maintenance programmes to full-scale private renovations. The genuine differentiator is the range. Most carpenters are strongest at either structural or finish work. Bertie does both, which means he can be trusted to see a renovation through from frame to finish without handing off to someone else mid-project. On period properties in particular, Bertie brings the kind of care and knowledge that sash window repairs and original joinery restoration actually require — not just a replacement-first approach.

How It Works

1

Assess the Scope

Bertie visits the property, looks at what's structural and what's finish, and gives you an honest picture of what's involved and in what order — particularly important when carpentry is part of a wider renovation.

2

First Fix, Then Finish

Structural work and first-fix elements are completed before plastering, decorating, or tiling begins — because that's the correct sequence. Bertie manages the order so nothing has to be redone.

3

The Detail Work

Second-fix joinery — skirting, architrave, doors, fitted elements — is completed once other trades are finished. The result should be tight, true, and built to last.

Carpentry & Joinery FAQs

Yes — and in most cases it's worth doing. Sash windows in period properties are well-made and, when repaired properly, will last decades. I can overhaul the cords, weights, and pulleys, repoint or re-draught-proof the frames, and get them running smoothly again. Replacement is sometimes the right answer, but I'll always tell you honestly which it is before any work starts.

That's exactly where I work best. If you need carpentry alongside plastering, tiling, plumbing, or decorating, I can manage all of it as one job. That means the trades happen in the right sequence, there's no gap between what one person finishes and the next starts, and you've got one person to call if anything needs addressing.

First fix is the structural and hidden carpentry work — door frames, window boards, noggins, subfloors — that goes in before plastering and decorating. Second fix is everything installed afterwards: skirting, architrave, doors, fitted shelving. Getting the first fix right makes the second fix far easier and the finished result far cleaner. If someone else has done shoddy first-fix work, I'll tell you what it means for the finish before I start.
